Clinical Associate Professor O’Hagan works in public and private practice. He operates privately at the Cairns Private Hospital Day Surgery and publicly at the Cairns Hospital. He consults at the Cairns Eye and Laser Centre and conducts a regular clinic at the Innisfail Hospital. Through the Cairns Eye and Laser Centre, Dr. O’Hagan is able to offer his patients subsidised cataract surgery for pensioners and non-pensioners who do not have private health insurance without having to go on a public waiting list, resulting in significant savings in costs and time. Dr. O’Hagan is a Queensland medical graduate, obtaining his medical degree from the University of Queensland. He is an extremely experienced eye surgeon having worked extensively in Ophthalmology within Australia and internationally with over 20 years of ophthalmology experience. His Fellowship training in ophthalmology was also undertaken in Queensland, at all the major Brisbane teaching hospitals.
Post fellowship, Dr. O’Hagan trained in Complex Cataract and Glaucoma surgery at the Western Eye Hospital, St. Mary’s, London, and has had Post Fellowship training in Complex Cataract and Refractive Surgery at the Mater Hospital, Dublin. Dr. O’Hagan worked as a Consultant Ophthalmologist for the NHS in England before returning home to Australia where he practices as a comprehensive ophthalmologist with special interests in simple and complex Cataract Surgery using premium multi-focal and mono-focal IOL lens implants,Glaucoma and Trabeculectomy and Mmimally Invasive Glaucoma surgery, Pterygium surgery, Medical Retinal disease, Oculoplastic and Lacrimal procedures. He is a member of the Australian, American and European societies of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
Clinical Associate Professor O’Hagan is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and a Fellow of the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine. He holds a Masters degree in Bioethics from Monash University and is a Clinical Associate Professor at the James Cook University School of Medicine. Associate Professor O’Hagan is currently the longest serving Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist working publicly at the Cairns Hospital. Presently, he is also involved as a research investigator in an Australia-wide, NHMRC multi-centered clinical trial for diabetic retinopathy. He is co-founder of the Queensland- Nepal Eye Project along with Dr. Anil Sharma.
Assoc. Prof. O’Hagan is especially interested in research, educating and learning from his fellow colleagues, locally and internationally. He has published numerous articles in internationally peer-reviewed Ophthalmology journals on topics including: cataract surgery, corneal disease, melanoma, medical retina and oculoplastic conditions. He has delivered presentations and been an invited speaker at State, National and International scientific meetings and is a life member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. His special interests include complex Cataract surgery and the use of premium IOL implants, complicated Glaucoma surgery, trabeculectomy, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery(MIGS). In his spare time Dr. O’Hagan enjoys relaxing and spending time with his family and friends.
